Inspiring STEAM pathways through inquirybased learning
Waitākere Area Principals Association
(WAPA): Future Pathways – STEAM in Action
Many young learners in communities with fewer educational resources and less exposure to STEAM careers, have limited opportunities to see how science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics connect to their everyday lives. Without access to engaging, practical learning experiences, students can miss the chance to build confidence, curiosity and awareness of future STEAM pathways. Through the GHD Foundation’s support, the Waitākere Area Principals Association (WAPA) is delivering Future Pathways: STEAM in Action, a collaborative inquiry-based learning initiative for students in Years 6–8 across multiple schools in New Zealand. The programme brings students together to investigate real-world challenges affecting their communities and develop practical solutions through applied STEAM learning. Guided by teachers and a dedicated STEAM project lead, students take part in learning activities that extend beyond the classroom and encourage creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. The initiative is helping students build confidence, curiosity and problem-solving skills while making STEAM learning more relevant and accessible. By applying STEAM concepts to real community challenges, students gain practical experience and begin to see themselves as future innovators and changemakers.
These outcomes matter because they support broader education equity by increasing access to STEAM opportunities for students who may otherwise have limited exposure to these experiences. Through stronger school ownership, community engagement and hands-on learning, WAPA is helping create clearer education and career pathways while inspiring the next generation of STEAM leaders in New Zealand.
