GHD Foundation Expands Support for STEAM Education Across Australia
The GHD Foundation is pleased to announce the expansion of support for six organisations and programs that are opening doors to STEAM education for young people across Australia. With the GHD Foundation’s funding, these initiatives are sparking creativity, fuelling curiosity, and empowering the next generation to pursue possibilities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
1. Empowering teachers & students for a STEM future - Australian Schools Plus
With dedicated funding, expert coaching, and essential resources, two school communities will implement place-based STEM initiatives to ignite a passion for STEM careers in over 450 students. Through targeted professional learning, 25 teachers will enhance their confidence and skills to deliver an enriched STEM curriculum, ensuring long-term, sustainable impact. Students will engage in hands-on learning experiences that address local and global challenges, deepening their understanding of key STEM concepts while developing vital skills in creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.
2. Indigenous-Led Outreach Program (STEM Warriors) – Engineers Without Borders Australia
Created by First Nations people for First Nations youth, this transformative program blends modern engineering with traditional knowledge. Through culturally rich workshops, students are inspired to explore STEAM careers and envision how engineering can shape a better future for their communities. With the GHD Foundation’s expanded support, this program is building on the success of its pilot phase and moving into an exciting new chapter for two new workshops.
3. Bringing STEAM Professionals to Classrooms – Teach for Australia
In remote and regional areas, access to STEM expertise is often out of reach—but not anymore. This innovative program is training 48 female STEM professionals to step into classrooms, bringing real-world knowledge and inspiration to the students who need it most. With mentorship and coaching, these professionals are igniting a passion for discovery and innovation in young minds.
4. FarLabs – La Trobe University
Science comes to life in rural and remote classrooms thanks to the Freely Accessible Remote Laboratories (FARLabs). Students can now connect with cutting-edge lab equipment remotely, breaking down barriers to hands-on science education. With the GHD Foundation’s expanded support, the program is reaching more communities through new content, teacher training, and in-person school visits, ensuring every student has the chance to explore the wonders of science.
5. Culturally Responsive Mathematics Education – ATSIMA
Math meets culture in this program developed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA) alongside the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, following the latest Closing the Gap report. Teachers in regional and remote areas are being trained in culturally responsive teaching methods that make math relatable and engaging for their students. By fostering connections between learning and heritage, this initiative is paving the way for stronger educational outcomes and empowered communities.
6. Robots in Residence Program – Ardoch
The world of robotics is inspiring students in eight schools across Australia, thanks to the Robots in Residence program. Over six weeks, students dive into coding and engineering with hands-on robotics kits, while teachers gain valuable training to continue the lessons. This expanded program ensures that students in under-resourced schools get a head start in the skills of the future.
These six programs reflect the GHD Foundation’s commitment to unlocking opportunities for young Australians through STEAM education. By expanding support for these vital initiatives, the Foundation aims to build a future where creativity, curiosity, and innovation can flourish for all.
